How to Select Area Rugs for Different Rooms

- Small Rooms: In tighter spaces, consider light-colored rugs including beige, white, pastels, and soft grays to reflect light and make the room feel more open. Subtle patterns and a single, large rug will help visually enhance the room effectively.
- Large Rooms: You have more freedom with bold patterns and darker colors to add warmth and definition. Use your rugs to enhance the design theme and existing decor!
- High-Traffic Areas: In household areas like living rooms, hallways, and dining rooms, consider low-pile wool, nylon and olefin rugs that are sturdier, easier to vacuum, and less prone to tripping hazards.
- Low-Traffic Areas: For lower use bedrooms and formal living rooms, you can indulge in silk, viscose, high-pile, and shag rugs that are luxurious, soft, and harder to clean.
- Living Room: Ideally, all four legs of your major furniture pieces like sofa and chairs should rest on the rug to create a cohesive, grounded seating area. In open-concept spaces, rugs are excellent for defining different functional zones.
- Dining Room: It’s extremely important that all the chairs fit on the dining room rug even when pulled out. Match the rug shape to your table shape, measure your dining table, and add 24-36 inches to all sides to ensure all chair legs remain on the rug.
- Bedroom: We recommend that rugs under a bed extend at least 18-24 inches beyond the sides and foot of the bed. Decide if you want the rug to extend under nightstands or stop before them. For small bedrooms, runners on either side of the bed add softness.
How to Set the Right Mood with Area Rugs
- Color: To set the perfect mood and style, complement the existing colors and textures in the room by picking a complementary rug that blends. Contrast your rug to create a standout focal point.
- Mood: Neutral and monochromatic colors create a calm atmosphere. Bold colors add warmth or energy.
- Existing Decor: If you have busy patterns on furniture or wallpaper, a solid-colored or subtly patterned rug will provide balance. If your furniture is mostly solid and neutral, a patterned rug can add personality and visual interest.
- Pile Height: A low pile rug is easy to clean, more durable, and better for high-traffic areas. Medium pile rugs provide a good balance of comfort and durability for common areas. High pile rugs like shag and plush lend softness, coziness, luxury, and warmth.
- Shape: We love matching rugs to the shape of the room or furniture! Rectangular rugs are the most common and versatile. Round or oval rugs can soften a room with many hard lines or work well under a round dining table or in an entryway.
- Maintenance: Depending on how much effort you are willing to put into cleaning, or the likelihood of stains in your home, select a rug material that matches your needs.
